Vinyl After Care

Proper Maintenance Matters!

By following these aftercare tips and utilizing recommended products, you can protect your investment and enjoy the striking appearance of your vinyl-wrapped vehicle for an extended period. Consulting with a professional installer for maintenance and repair services can also help ensure your wrap stays in top condition

  • Avoid washing for the first week: This allows the adhesive to fully cure and adhere properly to the vehicle's surface.

  • Be patient with bubbles or haze: Small bubbles or slight haziness can appear in the first few weeks, but these typically disappear as the wrap cures.

  • Clean off contaminants promptly: Immediately remove any dirt, bird droppings, or dead bugs to prevent them from damaging the vinyl wrap.

2. Regular cleaning

  • Hand wash is best: Manual washing with mild automotive soap and water using a soft sponge or microfiber cloth is the safest and most gentle cleaning method.

  • Two-bucket method: Use a two-bucket system to prevent dirt and grime from scratching the wrap. One bucket should contain soapy water, and the other clean water for rinsing the wash mitt.

  • Rinse thoroughly: Ensure all soap residue is removed with clean water to prevent water spotting and dulling of the wrap's finish.

  • Dry gently: Air dry the wrap or use a soft, clean microfiber cloth to pat the surface dry, avoiding harsh wiping or rubbing.

  • Recommended frequency: Wash your wrapped car every 1-2 weeks or more frequently if exposed to harsh elements like road salt, tree sap, or bird droppings.

3. Protecting the wrap

4. Handling difficult stains

  • Avoid harsh chemicals: Never use products containing petroleum distillates, solvents, abrasives, or high acidity on your vinyl wrap. This includes traditional car waxes, polishing compounds, bug and tar removers, engine degreasers, and dish soaps.

  • Consider ceramic coating: Applying a ceramic coating specifically designed for vinyl wraps can provide an additional layer of protection against UV rays, chemicals, and minor scratches.

  • Use UV protectant spray: Regularly applying a UV protectant spray, especially on horizontal surfaces, can help prevent fading and discoloration caused by sun exposure.

  • Park in the shade: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can degrade the wrap's material and cause fading or cracking. Parking in a garage or shaded area whenever possible will help extend the wrap's lifespan.

  • Soak and wipe: For tough stains like bird droppings, tree sap, or bug splatter, soak the affected area with warm, soapy water for several minutes to soften the contaminant. Then, gently wipe away with a microfiber cloth.

  • Spot clean with caution: For extremely stubborn stains, a solution of 2 parts 70% isopropyl rubbing alcohol to 1 part water can be used as a last resort, according to one expert. However, another expert cautions that alcohol can remove protective films on the wrap. Always test any cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area first. Croftgate wrap cleaners are designed to be safe and effective for removing difficult stains

6. Long-term maintenance

  • Avoid automated car washes: The brushes and high-pressure jets in automatic car washes can scratch, lift, or peel the vinyl wrap. Touchless washes are a better alternative but still carry some risk.

  • Use proper pressure washing techniques: If pressure washing is necessary, keep the pressure below 2000 psi, use a wide-angle nozzle (40-degree or wider), maintain at least 12 inches of distance from the surface, and avoid spraying at an angle. Vortex Wraps suggests keeping water temperature between 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Clean fuel spills immediately: Fuel can degrade the vinyl, so wipe off spills promptly with a wet towel and handwash the affected area as soon as possible.

  • Beware of rough surfaces and objects: Sharp objects like keys or coins can scratch or tear the vinyl. Be cautious when entering and exiting the vehicle and avoid placing sharp items on the wrap

  • Regular inspections: Routinely inspect your wrap for signs of wear, such as lifting edges, scratches, or discoloration.

  • Address damage promptly: Minor tears or lifted edges can often be repaired with vinyl wrap repair kits or by professionals, helping to prevent further damage. If the wrap starts to brown or discolor, remove the affected panel to protect the underlying paint.

  • Store indoors or use a cover: Garaging your vehicle is the best way to protect your wrap from UV rays, harsh weather, and pollutants. If parking outside, use a breathable car cover designed for wraps.
